Fringe: Night Of Desirable Objects

posted in television on

Before getting into the nitty-gritty of the episode, I wanted to again point out the growing rapport between the main characters - particularly Peter and Olivia. It's really making for a solidly acted show. In fact, Peter's character as a whole has grown in subtle ways that continue to help Joshua Jackson get out of "Pacey hell."

Non-mythology Fringe episodes are good because they always leak in just a little bit of mythology to keep the diehard fans enthused. This episode was no exception. Despite the main premise being Attack of the Scorpion Boy, this episode has its fair share of mythology moments, especially with the build-up of fake Charlie, placing himself in a position of trust to try to get at what happened between Olivia and William Bell in the alternate universe.

One particular moment I want to point out is the writers' deliberate use of Walter's dementia to have him repeat the idea of multiple universes for new watchers of the show. It was an excellent tool to keep the "regulars" entertained, while catering to the "newbies."

The main storyline of the episode itself was your standard, creepy mutant-under-the-ground horror tale. I was having visions of Children of the Corn earlier on, but the tunnel scenes brought on an entirely different monster. Perhaps creepier than the monster itself was the monster's father - especially in one scene where he's chewing metal to create a noose to hang himself with. Crazy.

There really wasn't anything Earth-shattering about this episode - just good acting and good atmosphere. Agent Jessup manages to find herself close to a Bible again, which is getting a little played fast in the context that the writers used it; but for the most part, this was a well rounded episode. We see a little exploration of Olivia's "special" abilities, while at the same time, watching her go through the struggles of returning to work after her near-death accident.

Solid writing like this will keep viewers coming back for more. Let's just hope they can manage to squeeze out enough of a niche from their Thursday night competition. Fingers crossed.
