The Pop Culture Grimoire

posted in pop culture on

This is a tweener post, I guess. It could fit inside either the religion and philosophy category or in the pop culture category. Considering author Taylor Ellwood's knowledge and use of pop culture, however, I decided to settle on the latter. It seemed more fitting.

For those of you unaware, I occasionally write stuff; and no, I'm not referring to just this blog. Recently, Taylor Ellwood edited an anthology on pop culture magic called the Pop Culture Grimoire. My essay "When Not is Pop" appears in it. I've worked with Taylor in the past, both on Key 64 and with another anthology of his Magick on the Edge, in which my essay "Memetic Infection and the Viral Language" appears.

In "When Not is Pop," (I do wish I would have thought of a better title) I discuss how ancient traditions that have either been vastly stereotyped and misunderstood, or almost forgotten, have been able to make a comeback - or have a rebirth, if you will - thanks to recent trends in pop culture. I specifically mention Mayan culture and Voodoo while discussing this point.
