Fringe: Dream Logic

posted in television on

A decidedly non-mythology-based story, last night's episode of Fringe turned into a belated ode to the Jekyll and Hyde myth with everybody's favorite fringe sciences. This was an episode of feel-good affirmations, bizarre murders and actually unforeseen twists that turned it into a pretty good standalone episode.

Dream states have always been an interesting concept to me. Though I've never slept-walked, I have been adept at lucid dreaming, having spent some time embroiled in the subject matter, and even writing a book about it. This episode of Fringe deals with waking dreams - nightmares to be precise - that lead people to commit acts of violence before they die of exhaustion due to their brain never recharging during the sleep cycle.

Of course, there has to be a villain behind it all, and Olivia and Peter go traveling around Seattle, Washington attempting to find to culprit.

The entire episode is pretty run-of-the-mill with a nice twist at the end where we find out that the good doctor who implanted these dream catching devices is his own worst enemy... unbeknown to him initially. I give solid grades to the actor (Ravi Kapoor) portraying the doctor, as well as the writers for crafting that slight little twist that was both believable and initially undetectable - a far better sleight-of-hand than many other shows and movies.

The truth heart of the episode lies in two background threads. Olivia - still attempting to piece together her life after the accident - is playing another "game" with Sam Weiss. This time she's collecting business cards from people wearing red, and ultimately circles letters to come up with a phrase that means something to her. The phrase? The phrase (although grammatically incorrect) let's her know that she's going to be fine.

I'm unsure what to think of these feel-good segments. They seem very much out of place, and I can't help but wonder if there's a bigger reason for it that we'll get to later in the season.

The second major background thread deals with Peter having a nightmare of the memory of when he was stolen from the other universe by Walter. This is an interesting build-up - a dividing line of sorts - between Walter and Peter, and I'm really interested in seeing just how they continue this - waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak.

Of course, I'm going to have to wait until November as it looks like Fringe is going on hiatus in favor of the World Series. As long as the Philadelphia Phillies are in the World Series though, I'll be okay with that.
