App for the Milk (Remember the Milk Desktop App)
posted in technology on
I'm a big fan of Remember the Milk - the online task management application... but not necessarily the web application version of it. Remember the Milk is a great application that is head-and-shoulders above any other task list solution out there, but with their online application, they try too much to be like a desktop app and it often comes across as rather clunky.
This didn't matter though, because I first became aware of Remember the Milk through their iPhone application. I loved the intuitive feel of the mobile app. It was nearly perfect - so you can imagine my disappointment when I found out that it was only available on a trial basis. To use it after the trial, you needed to upgrade to a pro account. I couldn't complain too much, however, as the application was so useful that I paid the $25.00 to become a pro user. It was well worth it.
With my cell phone all but set, there was one clear missing component: a desktop app. I'm all about the thin client, but I like light applications that run on the desktop when necessarily - mostly for background applications. For example, I like using Spaz as a Twitter client because I can keep it in the Windows task bar and it will alert me to new tweets. I wanted a light RTM application that could sit there and be available for a quick glance at a due task and a quick completion.
Unfortunately, it looks like the RTM boys are very much Mac guys. Us Windows people are left out in the cold when it comes to their plugins and those 3rd-party apps. There are Mac widgets and Gnome modules, but nothing just for Windows (or including Windows). I searched long and hard trying to uncover a solid Adobe AIR application, but nothing. All the available Adobe AIR applications were either bulky or just didn't work.
For a while, I contemplated building my own, and even started hacking around with the RTM API. When work stalled that, I resorted to a Windows Sidebar Gadget made up of a mini-browser and the iGoogle gadget for RTM. It looked a little out of place on the sidebar, but it worked.
Yesterday I found a solid start though... App for the Milk.
App for the Milk is an Adobe AIR application in it's infancy, but carries a quick list, a quick add and easy completion. Though it doesn't have all the features that I would like to see in it (and it mimics a Mac look-and-feel), it's a great start, and by far the best RTM Adobe AIR application out there - making it the best Windows desktop app for RTM as well. I'm curious to see where the development leads.

App for the Milk is pretty good, but you might give Cheqlist a try if you don’t mind that it’s JavaFX: http://eriwen.com/tools/cheqlist-remember-the-milk-app/
