The King of all White Boys: Television
As much as I love Lost and the very character-driven nature of the entire epic, I have to say that the mystery surrounding the Dharma Initiative is by far my favorite aspect of the show. I wish the show had gone into much more detail about them. Hell I'd even support a Dharma Initiative spin-off series (off-Island) about mad scientists, corporate espionage and the mysteries of the universe.
On Twitter I discovered a link ...
As I plan to go through all of the main plot points, mysteries, challenges, etc. in detail while re-watching the entire series, I'll only give some brief thoughts here. After all, such an epic ending to a roller-coaster show deserves some first impressions.
Needless to say, the Lost producers proved me wrong in my assessment of the so-called "flash sideways." And although I would have preferred a "happily-ever after" in which all of our ...
A lot of people think Lost jumped the shark last season when they began to incorporate time travel into their episodes. On the other hand, there are others that believe it jumped the shark way back in season three when Jack, Kate and Sawyer spent way too much time in the Others' village doing not much of anything. Although I won't point to a particular moment that I feel entails "jumping the shark," I ...
Well... not all reviews are getting canned from this blog. I've decided that too much of my time during the week (when I actually get time to blog) ends up going towards reviewing television episodes of Dollhouse and Fringe. Now I enjoy writing those reviews, but too often I feel obligated to make sure I get those out, even if I have a better blog post on the burner.
Furthermore, the reviews often end ...
This show has been officially cancelled... and that's a shame. No, this isn't Joss Whedon's best work, but this showing has become very entertaining, and in a world where most sci-fi drama's follow a specific script, Dollhouse continues to offer surprises around every turn.
The genius is in the pacing. Whereas many mythology-driven shows only have a handful of secrets and continue to dwell on and manipulate those mysteries, Whedon is ...
Every once in a while you need a good episode that plays off of a classic science fiction theme. This is that episode. Borrowing pretty liberally from James Cameron's Alien movies, this episode of Fringe finds the team investigating a crashed freighter with illegal immigrants that had giant hook worms bursting out of their stomachs (up through their mouths however - not actually through their stomachs).
This was another non-mythology episode, which is a pretty ...
This was probably the best Fringe episode of the current season. We don't learn a whole lot about the Observers, but what we do find out is brain food for any geek or show mythology buff.
In this episode, one of the Observers kidnaps a young woman, which sparks Olivia and the team to try and track him down. Meanwhile, this Observer stirs up trouble with his associates by interfering in the natural course ...
After a couple of weeks off and then a missed episode, I'm back on point with the Fringe episode reviews, and this episode brings us back with a non-mythology episode.
Everything about this episode was pretty much standard fair - disgruntled child, mind control, lead character being forced to shoot another character. In fact, I'm pretty sure I saw most of the elements of this episode in a few different episodes of the X-Files ...
This was, by far, the best episode of the season, and is close to being the best episode of the entire series. Once again Eliza Dushku's Echo wasn't the main storyline, but fellow doll Sierra was very effective on the center stage in her stead. We get to learn exactly how Sierra became a doll, and it greatly creates empathy for not only her character, but also Topher's as well. In fact ...
A decidedly non-mythology-based story, last night's episode of Fringe turned into a belated ode to the Jekyll and Hyde myth with everybody's favorite fringe sciences. This was an episode of feel-good affirmations, bizarre murders and actually unforeseen twists that turned it into a pretty good standalone episode.
Dream states have always been an interesting concept to me. Though I've never slept-walked, I have been adept at lucid dreaming, having spent some time ...
As mentioned in my Fringe review, moving houses (not to mention states) hampered my television reviewing a bit. I'm back on the ball, but a little delayed. Normally, I would have posted this Dollhouse review on Saturday, but I was busy painting.
What to say about the latest Dollhouse? Eliza Dushku seems to be playing second fiddle yet again as her character Echo is relegated to nothing more than sexy eye candy for yet ...
I've been quiet on my blog recently, but it has nothing to do with laziness or discontent, so rest assured that the posts will go on. I made a promise to myself to keep this thing rolling and even include some podcasting and video casting along the way. Recently, I've only been posting comic book and sci-fi television reviews, but that was mostly due to my switching jobs. Now that things have settled ...
Dollhouse was one of those shows that started off rather shaky last season. I was pulling for it because I'm a fan of Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku, but I didn't quite know what to make of it. The first several episodes were nothing more than personalities-of-the-week for Dushku, while the rest of the cast were bland shadows. Ultimately I decided to stick around, and I'm glad that I did. Once Dollhouse ...
Before getting into the nitty-gritty of the episode, I wanted to again point out the growing rapport between the main characters - particularly Peter and Olivia. It's really making for a solidly acted show. In fact, Peter's character as a whole has grown in subtle ways that continue to help Joshua Jackson get out of "Pacey hell."
Non-mythology Fringe episodes are good because they always leak in just a little bit of mythology to ...
Fringe is back on television, which is great for fans such as myself; but moving the show to Thursdays at nine o'clock at night could be the death knell for this great show. Pitting it against CSI, Grey's Anatomy and another cult show in Supernatural doesn't leave many viewers left. FOX is really banking on hardcore Fringe fans to keep things elevated. Thankfully this could change, as Fringe is partially handicapped by ...
Further proof that "They" are looking towards "Us" for the next generation of cultural hits and snazzy media fads, the Disinformation DVD is a collection of four episodes of the British counterculture, reality-bending, mockumentary hosted by Richard Metzger of The Disinformation Company. The DVD also includes six hours of the Disinfo.con event. My only question is: What were "They" thinking?
The Disinfo series itself is uneven, but to be fair, it contains a little ...
